Tropical Storm Melissa Grows Stronger As It Moves Toward Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon highest-level cyclone as it shifts in the direction of Jamaica, causing life-threatening rapid inundation and rock falls.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to hit the coast by midweek, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been announced as this storm produces up to thirty inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been told.

The cyclone is the thirteenth hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in November.

"A multi-day period of damaging winds and intense precipitation has started and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and many mudslides," advised meteorological officials.

The nation's leader Andrew Holness said: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are worried, who are extremely apprehensive, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage nervousness and any apprehension and worry is to stay ready."

Locals are being told to protect their properties with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to stock up on essentials.

Broader Effects

Advisories are also ongoing for areas in Haiti including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Rock slides currently triggered by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Path

Melissa is forecast to move across Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic.

By the moment it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have diminished to a third-level cyclone.
