Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
